left|100x150px|thumb|நுழைவாயில் சோழர்கள் காலத்தில் சதுர்வேதி மங்கலம் என்றும், தமிழில் நால்வேதியூர் என்றும், பின்னர் நாலூர் என வழங்கப்படுகிறது. குலோத்துங்க சோழனின் படைத்தளபதி ஆகிய பிரமாதிராஜன் என்கிற ஞானமூர்த்தி பிறந்த ஊர் இந்த திருநாலூர். பெரும் தவசீலரான ஆபஸ்தம்பர் இந்த இறைவனை பூசித்து பெரும் பேறு பெற்றார். இவ்வாலய லிங்கத் திருமேனியின் தலையில் சில நேரங்களில் பெரிய பாம்பு ஒன்று படமெடுத்த நிலையில் காணப்படும். இது பற்றிய குறிப்பு தேவாரத்திலும் உள்ளது. மயானம் என முடியும் திருத்தலங்கள் ஐந்து உள்ளன. அவை நாலூர் மயானம், திருக்கடவூர் மயானம், காழி மயானம், வீழி மயானம், கச்சி மயானம். இந்த நல்லூர் மயானத்திற்கு தென்மேற்கே சுமார் ஒன்றறை கி.மீ. தொலைவில் நாலூர் என்ற ஊர் உள்ளது. இது வைப்புத்தலமாகும்.
